Sister Elizabeth (Betty) Foos died peacefully March 7th at St. Bernardine Home in Fremont surrounded by Sisters of her Mercy community.  She was 92 years old and a Sister of Mercy for 74 years.

Sister Betty was born February 25, 1931, in Fremont Ohio to Alvin Anthony and Margaret Elizabeth Gross Foos.  She attended St Ann’s parish grade school and St Joseph’s high school both in Fremont.  Following graduation, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1949. She made her perpetual vows in 1955. She attended Edgecliff College in Cincinnati, Mary Manse College in Toledo. and graduated from Xavier University in Cincinnati with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She then began her many dedicated years of ministry as an elementary school teacher in various Toledo diocesan parish schools.

Sister Betty taught at Sr. Ann’s in Fremont, St Mary’s in Vermilion, St. Mary’s Mansfield and many others. Her love of young children was manifested in and out of the classroom.  She had a way of making each child feel special and her classrooms were always well organized with activities and lessons to captivate the children. Her excellence in the classroom was well known.  On leaving the classroom, Sister spent several years in ministry at Our Lady of the Pines Retreat Center in Fremont.

Sister Betty will be remembered for her gentle ways, kind attention to all and the helpful service she gave to others.   She was fond of helping a stranger in the grocery store or chatting with a young child she met on the street. No task was too small if it helped another.  Her birth family and her sisters in community were blest in many ways by her selfless giving nature. She was always ready for a new adventure or experience.

She was a wonderful example to her Sisters in Community and employees of St. Bernardine’s in her silent suffering during her last five years of life.  She was unable to communicate except for the occasional twinkle in her eye or faint smile during evening ice cream treats from the nurses who loved her so. Sister Betty became the trusted ear to Sisters and staff knowing their troubles and concerns were safe with her and locked into her prayers.

She is survived by members of her religious community, the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas; her sister Jean (“Teensie”) Tuckermann,; sisters -in-law; and many nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her brothers Robert, Thomas, and Michael.

A Welcoming Service will be held in the St. Bernardine Chapel Fremont, OH, Friday (Mar. 10) at 10 AM with a Funeral Mass at 11:00, followed by a graveside service and luncheon.

Attendees are required to show verification of Covid vaccines and to wear a mask.
