Sophie "Sophia" Jean McCloy, 88, passed away on Monday, May 9, 2022 at Countryside Manor. She was born on January 2, 1934 in Fremont to the late Vincent and Stella (Kot) Golamb. As the daughter of Poland immigrants, Sophia, also known by her Polish name Zosia, grew up in the Polish community of Fremont. Most know this area as the Prairie. Sophia was fluent in Polish and frequently spoke it with her mother and in more recent years.
Sophia graduated from Fremont Ross in 1951. In the past, she was a devout member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Sophia made her house a home and it was with great pride and joy that she would cook and bake; her specialties including Polish dishes like Kapusta and Cabbage Rolls. She tended to all the details inside and out to make it inviting and comfortable to all guests which included gardening and tending to her flowers and roses.
She married Richard Brennen McCloy on September 5, 1953 at St. Casimir's Catholic Church. They were married for 32 years and they raised 2 children, Jeannie and Dennis McCloy. Sophie and Richard later divorced in 1985. She was fortunate to have had 2 caring, loving, and compassionate men to share her life with after her divorce. Her first wonderful companion was Robert "Bob" Vought. They were together until his passing in January of 1997. She then was truly blessed to spend the next 21 years with the true love of her life, Ralph "Sam" Davidson, Jr. until his passing in August of 2018.
For 42 years, Sophie was a member of the Fremont Fraternal Order of the Eagles #712. She worked there as a mixologist from June 1981-December 1998. Upon her retirement, she had been the only full-time employee who officially retired from the Fremont Eagles. On her last day of work, she was celebrated in great grandeur with a surprise retirement party. A stylish big white limo picked her up at her residence along with two of her friends, one of them being her best friend, Nancy Anderson. During their ride they enjoyed full glasses of bubbly. Upon their arrival at the Eagles Ballroom, with her companion, Sam, Eagles members, her daughter, and three of her grandchildren, everyone enjoyed food, cake, presents and an artificial Christmas tree loaded with lots of cash hanging on the branches. As a joke to Sophia, she was honored with flyers printed and posted throughout the Eagles Club of her when she was a beautiful babe in her teens and twenties.
In December of 1998, she and Sam were awarded "Best Christmas Display" in the city of Fremont.
When she was able, Sophia enjoyed camping and boating, spending lots of time on Lake Erie on a 26' Trojan Boat named "Zosia" after her Polish name. She also enjoyed traveling to different states, especially West Virginia and Canada. She made several special trips to fly to the state of Washington to visit with her grandchildren and great-granddaughters. In April of 2015, she was able to cross off the final things on her "Bucket List" which included a trip to Hawaii and flying over Oahu island including over Diamond Head volcano in a helicopter with her companion Sam, daughter, and her daughter's companion. She also spent time with her two granddaughters in Ohio as they were growing up and celebrated their birthdays, holidays and special milestones together.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Jeannie Shaffer (Steve Dearth) of Findlay; grandchildren, Brock (Heidi) Shaffer, Aaron Shaffer, and Zachary Shaffer, Katelyn McCloy, Elizabeth McCloy; and great-grandchildren, Emmy Shaffer, Anna Shaffer, and Braxton Price.
She is preceded in death by her son, Dennis McCloy; siblings, Julia Davidson and Mary Ellen Hammons; and companions Robert Vought and Ralph Davidson, Jr.
The family would like to thank all of the staff at Southern Care Hospice especially nurse, Sherri Mullins.
Proverbs 31:31 "Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate."
