Pastor James Avers, beloved husband, age 85, of Fremont, passed away on September 2, 2021, at Stein Hospice in Sandusky, Ohio. He was born on November 15,1935, in Cleveland to Paul Henry and Melba Leona (Zerger) Avers. James was a 1953 graduate of Clyde High School. He graduated in 1957 with his bachelor’s degree from Capitol University and attended four more years of school at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Seminary in Columbus until his ordination on July 25, 1967. From the time he graduated from Capitol until he began school for his ordination, James worked for Tritch Overhead Door. James was a Pastor of Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in North Royalton, Ohio from 1967 until 1979, a pastor at Grace Lutheran Church in Eaton, Ohio from 1979 until 1993, Faith Lutheran Church in Fremont from 1993 until 2004, and most recently the Visitation Pastor for Grace Lutheran Church in Fremont from 2004 until 2017. During all his years with the church, the one service that James loved above all else was to provide assistance those that were homebound. On April 25, 1959, he married the love of his life, Linda Jane Behnke, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Clyde, and she survives.
Left to Cherish his memory in addition to his wife, Linda Avers, are his beloved children; Amy A. Avers of Fremont, Andrew (Rachael) Avers of Washington Twp., Ohio, beloved grandchildren; Morgan (Alex) Rutledge, Kendra Avers, and his beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Paul Avers, who passed in 2012.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 9, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 1187 CR 128, Fremont, Ohio, 43420. Funeral services will begin at the church at 11:30 a.m. Pastor Tim Miller and Pastor Harold Grafe will officiate. Burial will follow at Faith Cemetery. The family requests that all visitors wear a mask to all indoor services. For those unable to attend, livestreaming of his services will be available on the funeral home’s main page under the Live Webcasts tab.
