Michael J. Ryan, 72, of Fremont passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 27, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was born on August 1, 1951 in Bellevue to the late John E. and Imelda E. (Hughes) Ryan.
Mike was a 1969 graduate of Fremont Ross. He continued his undergraduate education at the University of Toledo and earned his Masters and Ph.D. in English from Bowling Green State University. For many years Mike was an instructor of English at Terra State Community College retiring in 2016.
On October 9, 1981 Michael married the love of his life, Martha R. Miller at Saint Mary Catholic Parish in Millersville. Together they shared 41 years of marriage.
Michael was a member of St. Ann's Church where he was in the choir and a cantor. Music was a big part of Michael's life. He loved traditional Irish music and was a talented player of the hammered dulcimer, tin whistles and guitar. He loved history and had a gift for family genealogy and stories. He also enjoyed reading, reciting poetry, spending time outdoors, and going on vacation to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Martha; children, John E. (Elise) Ryan of Pittsburgh, PA, Mary Ellen "Molly" Ryan of Port Clinton, OH, and James P. (Lindsay) Ryan of Pataskala, OH; grandchildren, Audrey, Isla, and Piper Ryan; and sister, Ellen Hill of Sandusky, OH.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Tom Hill.
Visitation for Michael will be held on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Crematory, Fremont. There will be a Vigil and a time of special remembrances for him beginning at 7:30 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, Sept. 1st 10 AM at Saint Ann Catholic Church, Fremont. Rev. Matthew Frisbee will officiate and burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Fremont.
Memorials in honor of Michael may be made to Saint Ann Catholic Church or to the Lewy Body Dementia Association.
