John McDaniels

July 15, 1940 — May 23, 2020

John McDaniels, 79, died with loved ones by his side Saturday, May 23, 2020.

He was born in Fostoria on July 15, 1940, to Charles and Lenora (Babb) McDaniels, and raised by his mother and grandparents, John and Altha Babb.

On June 24, 1967, he married Sharon Phillips at the Church of the Nazarene in Risingsun.  Together they shared 39 years of marriage and raised six children at their Gibsonburg home. Sharon preceded him in death on May 31, 2006.

John worked and retired as an auto mechanic. He was a dedicated family man, known not to be sappy. He often spent his time playing with his grandkids, mowing the lawn, and watching western or military movies. John never met a stranger and always had a story to tell. He was a selfless man who helped others in any way he could. He enjoyed laughing and giving people his point of view, often using “the bird” finger. John was especially fond of his beloved dog, Queenie, as well as elephants.

Surviving are children John “JC” (Mary) McDaniels of Port Clinton, Jodie (Charles) Bender of Fremont, Betty Jo (John) Helle of Gibsonburg, Sharon T. “Susie” (Tim) Strause of Gibsonburg and Robert (Marilyn) McDaniels of Fremont; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Cloyce; and brother, Albert Woodmancy.

Family viewing and services for John will be private.  A graveside service at West Union Cemetery will be livestreamed on the Herman Funeral Home Webpage on Friday, May 29.  Rev. Dan Ritter will be officiating.
