Janet L. Merritt, 87, of Fremont passed away at her home on Sunday, August 6, 2023. She was born in Fremont to Harry and Helen (Shoemaker) Smith.

For 43 years, she worked at Prairie Market where she would do everything from work as a cashier, a clerk and even a meat cutter, retiring 2007.

Janet enjoyed winning at Bingo, competing on couples bowling leagues, and planting and tending to her flowers. Most of all, Janet loved to spend time with her family and use her talents in sewing for making clothes for her grandchildren.

On November 1, 1952, She married the love of her life, Calvin, in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. They shared 66 years of marriage until his passing on January 6, 2019.

Surviving are her children, Pat Merritt of Fremont, Scott (Janet) Merritt of Lima and Brad Merritt of Fremont; daughter-in-law, Janice Merritt; grandchildren, Deanne (Steve) Roesch, Tami (David) Locke, Amanda (Dustin) Miller, Stephen Merritt and Andreia (Bradley) LeFevre; great-grandchildren, Annika & Maci Locke, Emelia & Parker Roesch, Lucas Merritt, Kelly, Roger, Garth & Brinlee Miller; sister, Lela Mae Sacco of Naples, FL; and special canine companion, Toby.

Janet is preceded in death by her parents; son, Roger Merritt; brothers, Kenneth Smith and Robert Shockley; sister-in-law, Mildred Shockley; and brother-in-law, Tony Saaco.

Memorials in Janet's name may be made to ProMedica Heartland Hospice.

Friends and family will be welcomed to the Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Crematory, Fremont on Thursday, August 10, 2023 from 4-8 PM. Funeral Services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, August 11th at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at McGormley Cemetery, Fremont.
