James Gruver, 85, of Huron, passed away August 20, 2022, at Admiral’s Pointe in Huron. He was born in Fremont to Merle and Marjorie Gruver on May 11, 1937. James was a 1955 graduate of Fremont Ross High School. On September 7, 1955, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and received his honorable discharge on September 6, 1961. After serving in the military, James began an apprenticeship as an electrician for Whirlpool in Clyde and later worked for Kelsey Hayes in Kingsway. James ended his working career on January 1, 1998, after working for Ford Motor Company in Maumee, Ohio, as a maintenance supervisor for 24 years. On April 30, 1965, James married Nancy Hasselbach at Grace Lutheran Church in Fremont, and she survives.
James acquired a love for scuba diving while serving in the military in the Philippines. He also loved flying kites and would travel across the nation to attend kite festivals with his wife. James was a member of the Black Swamp Air Force Kite Club as well as Grace Lutheran Church.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Nancy Gruver of Huron; children, Deena Gruver of CA, David (Kelly) Gruver of TN, Douglas (Kathryn) Gruver of OH; grandchildren, Devin, Isaac, Jacob and Gabrielle Gruver; sister, Carol (James) Stanley; sister-in-law, Priscilla Gruver. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Rev. Dennis Gruver.
Visitation will be held Thursday, August 25, 2022, from 10:00am to 12:00pm at Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Crematory, 900 North Street, Fremont, OH, 43420. Funeral services will begin at the funeral home at 12:00pm. Pastor Mark Bogen will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at Greenwood (Kingsway) Cemetery in Fremont. For those unable to attend, livestreaming of services will be available on James’s obituary page on the funeral home’s website.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 705 W. State Street, Fremont, OH, 43420, or to Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH, 44870.
