Gerald "Jerry" R. Hassen, 87, of Fremont passed away with his family by his side at Stein Hospice, Sandusky on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. He was born on July 19, 1936 in Toledo, a son of Richard and Kathryn Hassen.
At age 11, Jerry began working at the Toledo Country Club to learn the game and practice shots which would be the foundation for a lifetime passion for the sport. Golf continued to be a passion he held for 73 years. In the 60's he set and maintained the course record for many years at Sycamore Hills Golf Club. Jerry often referred to himself as the golf ball "hawk" who made another sport out of finding lost golf balls on the course.
After attending Libby High School, Jerry served his country in the U.S. Marines from 1954-1957. He continued his service with the reserves until 1962. Jerry took on several employment opportunities through the years before finding his calling at the Sandusky County Veterans Office where he worked for many years as the Service Officer until his retirement. Jerry's service, and the unwavering service to his fellow veterans was very important to him. He was an active member of the Gibsonburg American Legion where he served in many officer positions including: Post Commander, County Commander and Service Officer.
On October 9, 1992, he married Joy Hughes, and together they shared the best 31 years of their lives in marriage.
All who met Jerry will remember him for his friendship, kindness, and compassion. His family will also hold close their memories of the many happy family euchre games and his ability to bring light to any moment. Jerry had a deep bond with his many rescued cats and dogs with whom he shared love and companionship. Jerry had a knack for turning frowns into smiles and dull moments into laughter - even in the most unlikely situations.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Joy; sons, Adam (Jordan) Bohland of Lexington, KY and Kyle (Charlyn) Bohland of Columbus, OH; grandchild, Atti Bohland; "honorary grandson" Ethan Longoria of Fremont; and siblings, Kathy Gibson and Don Hassen.
He is preceded in death by his son, Rusty Hassen and siblings, Judy Darbaro and Robert Hassen.
Friends are welcomed to join the family in honoring Jerry's life on Sunday, October 29th at West Union Cemetery, Gibsonburg at 11:00 A.M. where services followed by Military Honors will begin. The family would like for guests to continue the celebration back at the Gibsonburg American Legion where a luncheon will be held.
