Gary Nossaman, 84, passed away peacefully in his home on September 6, 2023. He was born January 22, 1939 in Fremont, Ohio, to Manuel and Mildred (Fillinger) Nossaman. Gary attended Port Clinton High School where he played football, basketball and ran track. In recognition of his talents, he was officially inducted into the Port Clinton Hall of Fame in 1998 for his achievements in sports. In addition to being athletic Gary was also a talented musician. He sang on the radio and in his senior year of high school he portrayed Frank Butler in “Annie Get Your Gun”.
After graduating from Port Clinton in 1957, Gary earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Capital University in 1961 as well as a Masters Degree from Bowling Green State University. He taught history and government for 30 years at Fremont Ross High School until his retirement in 1991.
Gary was the president of the Fremont City Council and also served as the Sandusky County Commissioner from 1992 to 1996. He was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church, a member of the Elks, the Moose, the Eagles, and loved watching OSU, Cleveland Browns, and the Cleveland Indians.
On June 23, 1962, he married Mary Schilling in Oxford, Ohio, and they enjoyed 61 wonderful years of marriage until his passing.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Nossaman of Fremont; children, Greg (Mindy) Nossaman of Columbus, Jeff (Kim) Nossaman of Bryan, OH, Scott (Lori) Nossaman of Fremont; grandchildren, Billy (Kayla), Alex (Allie), Drew, Nick (Crosbi Harville), Addie (Marc McCuen), C.J. Nossaman, Addie Tate; great-grandchildren, Brielle, Nora; sister, Toni Nossaman of Huron, OH; brother-in-law, John (Sue) Schilling of Plain city, OH; sister-in-law, Barb (Gerry) Myers of Eaton, OH.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be Sunday, September 10, 2023, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Home, 900 North Street, Fremont, Ohio, 43420. Additional visiting will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 705 W. State Street, Fremont, Ohio, on Monday, September 11, 2023, from 10:00 AM until the start of funeral services at 11:00 AM. Pastor Mark Bogen and Lay Associate Minister Maureen Pump will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. For those unable to attend, live-streaming of services will be available by following the link provided on Gary’s obituary page.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church.
