David J. Ackerman, 77, of Fremont, passed away February 4, 2023 surrounded by his family. He was born on November 15, 1945, in Fremont, Ohio, to John Jacob Ackerman and Juanita (Dodway) Ackerman. David was a 1963 graduate of St. Joseph Catholic High School. On January 3, 1966 he entered into the United States Army and served in Vietnam where he earned the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1960 device, 4 Overseas Service Bars, and a Marksman Rifle Badge for the M-14 rifle. David received his honorable discharge on January 16, 1970. On December 20, 2013, he married Norma Lozano in Fremont, and she survives. David worked for the Ohio Turnpike on the maintenance crew for many years until his retirement on January 31, 2007,
In his spare time, he enjoyed sharpening knives and making his own ammunition. He was a member of the NRA, the Eagles, and attended the Church on 53. He loved animals and even owned and cared for horses when he was younger.
Left to cherish his memory are is wife, Norma Ackerman of Fremont; children, Dawn (Todd) Williams, Renee (Jason) Witt; step-sons, Andrew Berger and Geoff (Sarah) Berger; grandchildren, Trent, Tate, Taylor, Meagan, Emma, Elie, Layla, Niko, Caleb; sister, Debby Rader, and fur-babies, Beau and Jack.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside services will be February 8, 2023, at 10:30 AM at McGormley Cemetery in Fremont with military honors provided by the VFW and American Legion. Pastor Viola Recny will officiate.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Sandusky County, 1315 N. River Road, Fremont, OH, 43420.
