Carol Holcomb, 99, of Helena, passed away July 16, 2024, at Genoa Retirement Village. She was born December 25, 1924, in Gibsonburg, Ohio, to Raymond P. and Hilda (Dumminger) Kirwen. Carol was a 1942 graduate of Gibsonburg High School. On Dec. 28, 1945, she married Charles “Chuck” Holcomb Jr., in the Parsonage of St. Michael Church. He passed away July 20, 2019, and they would have celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary. In her younger years she helped her parents at their supermarket, Kirwen’s Super Market, and ran the former C&C Market in Helena in addition to being a busy homemaker for her four children. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church where she sang in the choir and devoted her free time to volunteering for the Helena Community Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary. Carol enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, and especially loved going out to eat at Chud’s where she and Chuck were regular patrons. They also kept active with square dancing and bowling. Carol loved gardening, was an excellent cook and baker and could can just about anything. In fact, her knowledge of cooking recipes was so broad that she was eventually cut off from a radio show contest for guessing daily recipes because she won so often.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Kenneth (Patricia) of Sunnyvale, CA, Kathy Holcomb of Fremont, Jeffery (Cindy) of Gibsonburg and Jill Swanson of Brownsville, TX; 9 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; siblings, Mary Herman of Gibsonburg, Rita Brown of Gibsonburg, Nancy Kirwen of Erie, MI; close family friend, Jane Karu.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Raymond “Bud” (Bernadine)Kirwen, Donald Kirwen, Margaret “Peg” (John)Wonderly; sister-in-law, Marcella Kirwen; brothers-in-law, Earl “Bill” Brown and Robert Herman.

Visitation will be held Monday, July 22, 2024, from 4-7 p.m., at Herman-Veh Funeral Home & Crematory, 319 W. Madison Street, Gibsonburg, OH, 43431. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at 10:00 a.m., at St. Michael Catholic Church, 317 E. Madison Street, Gibsonburg, OH, 43431. Monsignor Tad Oxley will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery. For Those unable to attend, live-streaming of her services will be available by following the link provided on Carol’s obituary page.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to St. Michael Catholic Church.
