Calvin Merritt, 87, of Fremont, passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, January 6, 2019 at ProMedica Toledo Hospital. He was born on March 8, 1931 in Bradner, Ohio to Walter & Lottie (Burns) Merritt.
Calvin joined the U.S Army, proudly serving his country in Korea from 1948-1952. After his enlistment, he worked at Nickles Bakery until his retirement in 1994. Calvin was a member of the Fremont VFW, the American Legion Color Guard and the Local 20 Teamsters Union. He enjoyed bowling, working on crossword puzzles, and watching his favorite sports teams which were the Detroit Tigers, the Detroit Lions and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Calvin’s favorite thing to do was to spend time with his family and make memories with them.
On November 1, 1952, Calvin married the love of his life, Janet L. Smith, in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. She survives. Also surviving are his children, Pat Merritt of Fremont, Scott (Janet) Merritt of Lima and Brad Merritt of Fremont; daughter-in-law, Janice Merritt; grandchildren, Deanne (Stephen) Roesch, Tami (David) Locke, Stephen Merritt and Amanda (Dustin) Miller; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Calvin is preceded in death by his parents; son, Roger Merritt; and siblings, Raymond, Alfred, Archie, Robert & Gertrude Merritt and Hazel Lockmiller.
Visitation will be held at the Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services on Friday, January 11, 2019 from 4-8 p.m. Funeral Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at the funeral home. Rev. Alan Brown will officiate. Burial with Military Honors will follow at McGormley Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the donor’s choice.
