Bettie (Henkle) Heckman Cenkus

December 20, 1927 — March 11, 2020

Bettie A. (Henkle) Heckman Cenkus, 92, passed away in the evening of March 11, 2020 at Toledo Hospital. She was born on December 20, 1927 to the late Dorth E. and Minerva E. (Lanning) Henkle and was the only daughter among four children.

On January 1, 1983, Bettie married Richard Cenkus Sr. Before his passing in 1999, they enjoyed winning at casinos and the horse racetracks as well as spending time together traveling. Bettie worked for Cal Van Tools until 1983. She spent most of her life as a homemaker, caring for her children and grandchildren.

Bettie enjoyed many crafting projects including embroidering and ceramics, as well as going on walks, gardening, doing puzzles and reading in her spare time. She volunteered at Valley View and Elmwood of Fremont. She was a member of Journey Church.

Surviving family include: Bettie’s step-children, Christy Miller of Green Springs, Richard Cenkus Jr. of Castalia, and James Cenkus of Clyde; grandchildren, Carla (Robert) Beard, Vickie (Scott) Turner, Tracy (Andy) Alejandro, Lisa Fawley and Chad (Justine) Kinsey; 14 great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren.

Bettie is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard; children, Susan Fawley, Sandi Fries, and Bill Heckman; and brothers, Edwin Henkle, Joseph Henkle, and Darwin Henkle.

In keeping with Bettie’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, 10:00 AM at Oakwood Cemetery. Rev. Ken DeChant will officiate. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Fremont.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Journey Church, 565 OH-19, Fremont, OH 43420.
