Asa “Ace” R. Sabiers, 81, of Fremont, died on December 31, 2019 at Rutherford House. He was born in Amherst, Ohio, on September 15, 1938 the son of Edward and Jennie (Rash) Sabiers. He married Karen Born on January 25, 1964 in Henrietta, Ohio, and she survives
Mr. Sabiers graduated from Amherst High School in 1956 and from Bluffton College in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education. He taught art at Fremont Middle School for twenty-six years and coached Freshman basketball for fourteen years before retiring in 1992.
He served in the Army National Guard and was a member of the American Legion and also the Moose Lodge.
He was a member of Hayes Memorial United Methodist Church, serving as a treasurer for the United Methodist Men for many years. He most enjoyed family time. Camping, sporting events, bike rides, vacations, birthdays and holidays were favorite times spent. Running, lifting weights, gardening and reading were chosen pastimes.
Survivors include daughters, Kelly E. (Matt) Smith of Monroe, MI, Kathy J. (Doug) Metzger of Martin, OH, and Jenny L. (Jason) Sabiers of Fremont; eight grandchildren, Kirsten née Smith (Mike) VanDerMeulen, Asa and Amy Smith, Karley and Gabe Metzger, Briannnah Jenkins, and Jasannah and Julian Sabiers; and two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Ryan VanDerMeulen.
A sister, Darlene Hearn, of Sacramento, CA survives. A brother, Donald Sabiers, preceded him in death.
Visitation will be Sunday, January 5, 1-6 pm, at the Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Fremont. Funeral Services will be held at Hayes Memorial United Methodist Church on Monday, January 6, 10:30 am. Rev. Joshua Wynn and Rev. Jenni Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Fremont.
