Antonio “Tony” J. Picciuto, 100, of Gibsonburg, passed away at home surrounded by family on June 25, 2023. He was born on July 28, 1922, in Tiffin, OH, to Dominic and Antonetta (Nappa) Picciuto. Tony was a 1941 graduate of Gibsonburg High School. He served in the United States Army during WWII in the Asiatic Pacific from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with a bronze star, the Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award and the Victory Medal.

On June 21, 1947, he married Martha Wasserman at St. Michael Catholic Church in Gibsonburg, and she preceded him in death on August 13, 1987, after celebrating 40 years of marriage.

Tony worked for many years with S.E. Hyman Co. in shipping and receiving until his retirement in 1988. He was heavily involved in his community and was a lifetime member of the American Legion in Gibsonburg, the VFW, the Knights of Columbus, St. Michael Catholic Church, North Coast Museum, and an honorary life member of the GVFD and the Marsh Conservancy. Tony is famous for the wooden pocket crosses he has made and given to people all over the country. Over the years he has impressively made 32,700 crosses. For all his accomplishments and what he has added to his community, Tony was inducted into the Gibsonburg Hall of Fame, given a key to the city and honored with “Tony Picciuto Day”, which is celebrated on July 28th. In addition to his woodworking, Tony enjoyed fishing, golfing, riding his bike and working in his garden. He loved baking fresh Taralli and having his family visit for their Sunday morning coffee.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Paul (Julie) Picciuto, John (Lana) Picciuto, Pam (John) Beaber, Tina (Joe) Santiago, all of Gibsonburg; 12 grandchildren;17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. In addition to his parents and wife, Martha Picciuto, he is preceded in death by his son, Larry Picciuto; brothers, Michael, Jim, Sam Picciuto, and sister, Madeline Wheatly.

The Picciuto family would like to give special thanks to Tony's hospice nurse, friends, and angel, Rachel Garner.

Visitation will be held Thursday, June 29, 2023, from 1:00 PM until 7:00 PM, at Herman-Veh Funeral Home & Crematory, 319 W. Madison Street, Gibsonburg, OH, 43431. A vigil service will begin at 7:00 PM at the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, June 30, 2023, at 10:30 AM at St. Michael Catholic Church, 317 E. Madison Street, Gibsonburg, OH. Fr. Scott Woods will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Lawrence cemetery with military honors provided by the Gibsonburg American Legion.
