Herbert B. Arnold, 85, a World War II veteran and resident of Gibsonburg, Ohio, son of Jacob and Bessie (Kern) Arnold, died Thursday morning of a broken heart that never fully healed following the death of his wife, Norma R. (Ringle) Arnold in October, 2005.
In his final days, he had the love and support of his children, Deborah S. (Dennis) Fahle, of Gibsonburg, and Gregory I. (Joan) Arnold of Sylvania.
He graduated from Fremont Ross High School in 1940, and in 1942, enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a military policeman providing security for General Hodges and the King of England. He served in the European theater from 1942 until the end of the war in 1945. Herbert landed on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944.
Following the war, he returned and married Norma on March 5, 1946 at First English Lutheran Church in Gibsonburg.
He was active in the First English Lutheran Church, having served on its Church Council at various times and participated with anything that needed to be done at the church throughout his lifetime.
Herbert worked as a meat cutter at various businesses including Brandeis and Trautman in Elmore, and Smiths Meats in Lindsey, during his working years.
Herbert and his wife, Norma, enjoyed western square dancing in the 1960s and 1970s, and they were members of numerous dance clubs in the area.
Herbert had a passion for woodworking and made many beautiful projects which now provide memories of his skills and treasures for the future.
In addition to his children, Herbert is survived by grandchildren Mark (Katrina) Fahle, Brent (Kelly) Fahle, Daniel (Julie) Arnold, Steven Arnold, Angela Arnold, Samuel Arnold, and Emily Arnold; great-grandson, Grant Arnold Fahle, and step-great grandson, Bryant Hagemann.
He is also survived by two sisters, Jane Arnold and Hazel Arnold of Fremont.
Visitation shall be from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, 2007 at the Herman-Kinn-Veh Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 319 W. Madison St., Gibsonburg, Ohio with the funeral to be on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at First English Lutheran Church, Gibsonburg. Pastor Robert Young will officiate. Final committal services will be immediately following the funeral service at Quinshan Cemetery, Gibsonburg, Ohio. The family wishes to thank all those who expressed their sympathy and support for Herbert during his battle with numerous health problems during the last weeks of his life.
