Richard E. Gassner

Richard E. Gassner, Franklin Avenue, formerly of N. Columbus Avenue, died early Wednesday morning at Countryside Continuing Care Center. Richard was the eldest child born to Edward and Hulda (Pearson) Gassner. He was born on July 27, 1916 in Tiffin, Ohio.

He graduated from Old Fort High School in 1934 and was the first soldier recruited from Seneca County during World War II. He served from 1941-1945 as a sergeant in the Asian theater, serving in Guadalcanal, Fiji and Solomon Islands. Upon his discharge, he married Emma Krawetzke on July 30, 1945 and she survives. Richard and Emma just celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on July 30th with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Richard is survived by a son, James (Judith) Gassner of Fremont and a daughter Diane (Philip) Bork of Fremont, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Kummerer of Tiffin, brothers, Frank Gassner of Chicago and Walter Gassner of Republic.

Richard was employed by Paul M. Gillmor Trucking and then Matlack, Inc. for 42 years, retiring in February 1977. During his retirement, he loved to read and work around the house, but his greatest enjoyment came from being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

There will be no visitation per familys request. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, August 13th at 10:30 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery with Dennis Bork officiating. Memorials may be made to the donors choice. Arrangements are being handled by the Herman-Kinn-Karlovetz Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Fremont.
