Atwell E. Gilmore

July 1, 1921 — March 1, 2010

Atwell E. Gilmore, 88 of Woodville, OH passed away March 1, 2010 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo. He was born in Culpeper, VA on July 1, 1921 to Robert L. and Lillian Ann (Davis) Gilmore. Atwell graduated from Culpeper High School and attended Bluefield College in Bluefield, VA. He served on the Woodville Town Council for 6 years and was a member of the Woodville Civic Club and American Legion. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Woodville for 50 years. Atwell was a Navy Veteran. During WWII he served as a Signalman aboard the USS Long Island at the Battle of Midway in 1942 who took the 1st Marine Fighter Squadron into Guadalcanal. He also served aboard the USS Intrepid at the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, receiving 3 battle stars.

Gil had a witty sense of humor and always had a joke to tell, identified by his southern accent. He was artistically talented and enjoyed drawing cartoon characters when he was a teenager. Gil also enjoyed writing, calligraphy and painting pictures. He and his wife, Lois used to camp, canoe and travel.

Atwell and Lois, whom he met while in the Navy, owned and operated Zips Cafeteria in Woodville for 20 years.

He will be greatly missed by brother, Robert (Jackie) Gilmore of Culpeper, VA; sister, Marjorie Fitzgerald of Scottsville, VA; daughter, Faye (Jerry) Sikora of Tallmadge, OH; son, Jeff (Marian) Gilmore of Bayfield, CO; grand-daughters, Wendy (Steve) Petteys of Perrysburg, OH, Sheila (Eric) Watson of Maumee, OH, Eve (Mark) Gilmore-Dickman of Durango, CO; grandsons, David (Ying) Sikora of Wadsworth, OH and Alex Gilmore of Durango, CO; great-grandsons Carter and Grant Petteys; and great-granddaughter, Delilah Sikora. Gil will also be missed by his McDonald buddies. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Lois and sister, Doris Stringfellow.

A special thank you to the Hospice of Northwest Ohio nurses, aides, volunteers and others for the excellent care given.

A Graveside Service will be held at Westwood Cemetery in Woodville on at Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Jennifer Williamson officiating. Burial will be with military rites.
