Robert W. Gnepper, 93, of Fremont, died early Thursday morning at Rutherford House where he lived for a little over three years. Born on February 18, 1913 in Yuma, AZ, he is the son of Noah Ernest and Irene (Petticord) Gnepper. He was a 1931 graduate of Fremont Ross High School where he played trumpet in the school band. On September 11, 1936 he married Cora Clingaman in Wauseon, OH. She died April 8, 1987.
Robert served in the Navy during WWII, earning the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon and Victory Medal. He began working with his father at the familys roofing and painting business. Later he followed his fathers footsteps, becoming a self-employed contractor owning RW Gnepper Roofing and Painting of Fremont. He retired in 1975.
Robert was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he served many years as its Choir Director. He sang in the Navys Blue Jackets Choir and enjoyed playing trumpet with the Green Springs Community Band. Robert was a volunteer at Memorial Hospital and also delivered Mobile Meals. Robert spent time creating artwork and entering his pieces in county fairs where he was awarded several ribbons. He also enjoyed fishing and watching the Buckeyes.
Surviving are children, Maury (Sandy) Gnepper of Fremont and Luella (Rick) Smith of Perrysburg, 4 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Cora and birth mother, Jennie V. Williams.
Visitation will be on Friday from 2 4 and 6 -8 p.m. at the Herman-Kinn-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Fremont. Services will be on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 204 N. Wayne St., Fremont with visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
