Arthur William Jahns, 89, of Fremont, Ohio died at home on Friday, October 24, 2008. He was born in Riley Township on July 5, 1919 to William F. and Wilhelmine (Claussen) Jahns. He lived and worked on the farm and at the Great Lakes Sugar Company until he was inducted into the U.S. Army on February 25, 1942. He was a private and an Automatic Weapons Crewman in an Anti-aircraft Artillery Battalion, Battery B 462nd AAA. He served in the battles in Tunisia, Naples-Foggia and Rome-Arno in Italy, Southern France and Rhineland (Germany). He received the European, African, and Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with Five Bronze Campaign Stars, the Victory Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was injured and left paralyzed in a troop train derailment in Piqua, Ohio in May 1945 while returning from action in Europe. He was an avid card player, woodworker and enjoyed needlepoint for many years. He is survived by his brother, Norman Jahns of Fremont and sister, Marion Deppensmith of Huntsville, AL; 6 nephews, 1 niece, 13 great nieces and nephews and 15 great-great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Dorothy Karlovetz Eberhard, one great niece and one great-great nephew.
Visitation will be on Monday, October 27 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Herman-Kinn-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Fremont. Services will be on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Robert Quillen officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery with military rites provided by the American Legion and VFW.
Memorials may be made to St. Johns Lutheran Church or a charity of the donors choice.
