Paul R. King, 79, of Fremont, died on Thursday, April 10, 2008 at his home. He was born on December 12, 1928 in Gibsonburg to the now deceased Ray F. and Verda (Hopkins) King. Paul was a 1947 graduate of Gibsonburg High School and attended the University of Toledo for two years earning a Teachers Certificate in Vocational Education. He served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954 during the Korean War and three years in the Marine Reserves from 1948-1950. On April 8, 1950, he married Lola L. Amor at the East Side Presbyterian Church in Fremont and she survives. Paul worked at Sabroske Electric from 1965-1975, was the owner of King Electric and was the electrician for the Sandusky County Fairgrounds for 42 years. He taught at Vanguard Vocational School in Fremont and Sentinel in Tiffin (now Vanguard/Sentinel Career Centers) from 1975-1992 as an Electrical Trades Instructor. He retired in 1992. Paul was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Fremont, Sandusky County Retired Teachers Association, American Legion and the Moose. He was also the vice-commodore at the Fremont Yacht Club. Paul was very active in the community: leading the committee that started Save Anderson Field, built the Fremont Go-Cart Track, officiating at football and baseball games for 33 years, and he coached baseball in all areas he formed the Fremont Umpire Assoc. with partner Mark Diels. Paul played semi-pro baseball and in High School as a pitcher and first baseman. He was inducted into the OHSAA Officials Hall of Fame on June 13, 1998 having served as a registered official for 33 years. Paul was an avid fan of Fremont Ross, Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns and Ohio State. He attended the Cleveland Indians Spring Training in Winter Haven, FL for 12 years.
Surviving are children; Rick (Pat) of Grandville, MI, Cindy (Bill) Stierwalt, Mark (Susan) both of Fremont; 5 grandchildren, Eric & Lindsay King of Grandville, MI, Cynthia Stierwalt of Fremont, Jenny & Jared King of Fremont. He is preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Billy Stierwalt.
Visitation will be on Sunday, April 13, 2008 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Herman-Kinn-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Fremont. Services will be held on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Church of Christ with Rev. Elaine Bast officiating. Burial will follow at West Union Cemetery, Gibsonburg with military services provided by the Gibsonburg American Legion. Memorials may be made to the First United Church of Christ or ALS Association, 2500 S. 22nd St., Suite 102, Cleveland, OH 44115 in Pauls memory.
