John Arwin (Buzz) Mackey, 87 of Fremont, passed away on Monday, January 12, 2009 at his sons home with his family at his side. He was born on July 13, 1921 in Wayland, OH to John A. and Julia (Ramsdell) Mackey. John served with the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict as a Staff Sergeant. On January 20, 1945 he married Esther Casteel at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Oak Harbor, Ohio. She died on December 22, 2007. He was a welder and worked at Erie Proving Grounds in Port Clinton for 24 years, and retired from EPCO Inc. in 1984. John was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Fremont, a lifetime member of the VFW in Fremont and the American Legion in Green Springs, OH.
His children survive him, Judy (Ron) Campbell of Clyde, Janet (Herb) New of McKenzie, TN and Jeff (Aggie) Mackey of Fremont; grandchildren, Mike (Amy) Schafer of Bay Village, Tom (Cyndi) Schafer of Rolesville, NC and Ken (Amanda) New of McKenzie, TN; great grandchildren, Evan, Abby and Sophie Schafer of Bay Village, Jake & Kristen Schafer of Rolesville, NC, Courtney & Austin New and step great grandson Davis Leach of McKenzie, TN. Also surviving John are sisters Helen Warren of Oak Harbor and Evelyn Wagner of Fremont. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, stepfather, Clarence Weaver and brothers, Clare, James, Charles, Roger and Emmett.
Visitation will be on Thursday, January 15th from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Herman-Kinn-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Fremont. Services will be on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Robert Quillen officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery with military services.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hospice of Memorial Hospital, 430 S. Main St., Clyde, OH 43410.
