Vernon Leroy Buss Menkhoff, Sr., 82, of Fremont, died early Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at Memorial Hospital. He was born on April 12, 1925 in Gibsonburg, Ohio to the late Frederick and Amelia (Ohms) Menkhoff. Vernon served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946 during WWII, serving on the newly built USS Sidney Sherman. He married Joan Marie Hagerty on August 7, 1954 in Fremont and she survives. Vernon worked for Bowlus Trucking until 1987. He then drove bus for Fremont City Schools for thirteen years, retiring in 2001. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the Fremont Moose Lodge and a former member of the American Legion. Vernon enjoyed air shows also.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by children, Vernon L. (Tracy) Menkhoff,Jr., Linda M. (Steve) DePottey, Michael L. (Sandy) Menkhoff, and Donna (Adolph) Trevino, all of Fremont; brothers, James and Larry Menkhoff; sister Jeanie Lenhart, all of Fremont and sister, Mildred Pollard of Texas; nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jerry and Billy Menkhoff; and grandson, Ryan Menkhoff.
Visitation will be on Friday, February 15th from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Herman-Kinn-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Fremont. Services will be on Saturday at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. James Menkhoff officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by the VFW and American Legion Posts.
Memorial donations may be made in Vernons name to a charity of the donors choice.
