Wayne M. Nickel, 77, of Fremont, died early Wednesday morning, March 22, 2006 at the Medical University of Ohio, Toledo. He was born on February 12, 1929 in Fremont to Melvin Theodore and Clatys Kate Ruth (Hetrick) Nickel. Wayne was an Army veteran serving as a machine operator in the 46th & 47th Corp of Army Engineers, Regiment 742, stationed in the South Pacific and Korea. A teamster union member, Wayne was a driver for Tonys Bakery, later Nickles Bakery for 39 years, retiring in July of 1990. Wayne was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Kingsway, the VFW and American Legion Post. He enjoyed fishing, baking pies, antique tractor shows and was a S.C.R.A.P. follower. On March 10, 1951 Wayne married Hulda Pansy Wendt in Oak Harbor and she survives. Also surviving is son, Rick (Darlene) Nickel of Graytown; grandchildren, Ricky, Jamie, Justin, Douglas; two great-granddaughters, Serenity & Alyssa; siblings, Verna (Russell) Stuckey, Merle (Linda) all of Fremont, Eugene (Joan) of Oak Harbor and Myron (Audrey) of Fremont. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be on Friday, March 24th from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the Herman-Kinn-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Fremont. Services will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Kingsway with visitation one hour prior to services. Pastor Keith Koppenhofer will officiate. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery with military rites by the VFW and American Legion Post.
Memorial donations may be made to the church or the Kidney Foundation of Northwest Ohio.
