Carroll E. Root

Carroll E. Root, 86 of Fremont died early Saturday, May 26, 2007 at Bethesda Care Center. He was born to Walter and Orie (Waggoner) Root on April 7, 1921 in Fremont, Ohio. He married Beatrice E. Otermat on December 15, 1944 in Fremont, Ohio and she survives.

He was a U.S. Postal letter carrier for 30 years, and a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, and also a member at Grace Lutheran Church. Carroll went to Fremont Ross High School and furthered his education at Bowling Green State University & Ohio State University. He answered the call of duty for World War II by enlisting in the United States Naval Reserve, training at Great Lakes and Philadelphia Naval Hospital becoming a Pharmacists Mate First Class. He served 3 years and 9 months including in the South Pacific participating in several major raids including Marcus Island and Wake Island. He received a commendation at Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands operation and the Northern New Guinea operation. Also participated in the shelling of Admiralty Islands, Guam operations, Morotai Islands& Philippine Islands all while aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Ringgold DD 500.

Surviving Carroll are his children Martha Root of Wilmington, Mass. and Rev. Eugene C. Root of Philadelphia, PA. He is preceded in death by his parents, son; Kristopher, daughter; Marcene Root, brothers Walter Orson, Perry, Donald, Howard, Clarence and sisters Mary Falquette, Eva May Fought, and Sarah Root.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at the Herman-Kinn-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Fremont from 10-12 PM with funeral services at 12 Noon at the funeral home with Pastor Paul Gruetter officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery with military honors provided by the Fremont American Legion and VFW. Memorial contributions may be made to the Donors choice.
