Vernell F. Smith, 82, of Lindsey died on Saturday evening, June 20, 2009 at Bethesda Care Center, Fremont. He was born on July 5, 1926 in Rice Township to Robert F. and Pearl (Kiser) Smith. Vernell moved to Lindsey in 1931 and graduated from Lindsey School in 1940 and Fremont Ross High School in 1944. He served in the Marine Corp during WWII at Okinawa and during the Korean War at Inchon Korea and the Chosen Reservoir receiving the Korea Service medal with 6 stars, the United Nations Service Medal, the Army Distinguished Unit Citation and the Good Conduct Medal. Vernell was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church Lindsey. He was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed reading, gardening, crossword puzzles and playing cards.
Surviving is a sister, Margaret Smith of Fremont; step-sister, Eileen (Karl) Rogers of Lindsey; two step-nieces, Sharon Neifer and Karen (Stephen) Oberst both of Lindsey; great-nieces, Rebecca (Jacob) Noftz of Warsaw, IN and Kathryn (Tyler) Harriman of Canal Winchester, OH; great-great nephew, Eli Harriman and many cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Claribel Smith and stepmother, Lucy Smith.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Robert Metheny officiating at Lindsey Cemetery. Military rites will be performed by the Fremont American Legion and VFW.
There will be a family gathering and luncheon at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lindsey after the service.
Memorials may be made to the Bethesda Care Center Activities Department or to a charity of the donors choice.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Herman-Kinn-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Fremont.
