Velma Smith Hoag

Velma Bill Lutz Smith Hoag, 94, formerly of Fremont, died on Sunday, January 18, 2009 at The Manor of Perrysburg, OH. She was born Nov. 3, 1914 in Port Clinton, OH to Frederick and Martha (Wolfe) Lutz who preceded her in death. Velma was a 1932 graduate of Port Clinton High School where she was an avid athlete, and later attended Miami University in Oxford, OH. In June 1942 she married Howard McClain Smith who preceded her in death in 1975.

She was employed by the Selective Service Board in Fremont, and retired from federal service in 1973. She was a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church, the Fremont Book Club, and was very active in Junior Tennis at Roger Young Park.

Velma later married Stephen Hoag of Chicago. They had a great interest in travel and spent many winters at retreats in the southern states where she was enthusiastically involved in swimming, dancing, painting and tennis. Stephen preceded her in death in 2003.

She is also preceded in death by her sisters Fredna (Charles) Kreutzer and Jeannette (Bob) Dykeman, and her two brothers-in-law, all of Port Clinton.

Velma is survived by her daughters, Sandra Smith Campbell and Deborah Ellen Smith, both of Perrysburg. Also surviving are granddaughter, Sacha (Patrick) Crowley, two great grandchildren, Kiera and Sean, all of Lansing, MI. Also surviving are nephews, Jeffery Dykeman of AZ and Gary and Greg Kreutzer of TN.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Herman-Kinn-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services Fremont. There will be no formal visitation and a celebration of her life will be open to family and friends on February 7, 2009 at Hawksbridge Club House in Perrysburg from 2-4 PM.
