Norman O. Norm Swaisgood, 86 of Fremont, died late Thursday night, October 13, 2005 at Heartland of Perrysburg. He was born on April 24, 1919 to Oather K. and Loree (Kleinhen) Swaisgood in Helena, OH. On February 22, 1941, he married Anna Belle Craun in Carey, Ohio and she survives. The couple has a daughter, Norma Jean (Jim) Stark, of Perrysburg. Also surviving are brothers, Dwight (Betty) and Ronald (Lois) Swaisgood, both of Fremont. Norm was a 1937 graduate of Gibsonburg High School. He was a farmer in Scott Township for over 50 years, raising champion Guernsey dairy cattle and was an excellent grain farmer. Normans interest in youth and farming, was seen in his organization of the Lakota Scotties 4-H Club, of which he was the advisor for 10 years. From 1966 until retiring at the age of 80, he was a licensed independent insurance agent, being recognized many times as top salesman in the State of Ohio. Norm was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Fremont, where he served faithfully in many areas. He was a Trustee and former member of the Ad Council and Pastor Parish Relations Committee. Prior to moving to Fremont, in 1977, he served as superintendent at Scott Trinity Church, Risingsun, for 18 years and also held numerous other church offices. Norm was a past board member of the NW Milk Marketing Assoc. and Ohio Guernsey Breeders Assoc., past member of the Gibsonburg Farmers Elevator Board and president of the Sandusky County Farm Bureau Federation for 2 years. Mr. Swaisgood was elected to various Boards of Education for a total of 33 years. He was a 12-year member of the Risingsun and Lakota School Boards and was instrumental in the consolidation of Bradner, Risingsun, Jackson-Burgoon and Jackson-Liberty School Districts into the present Lakota Local Schools. Also, he was a member of the Sandusky County Board of Education, past president of the Vanguard Vocational Board and Trustee of Terra Technical College for 10 years. Norm served as a Scott Township Trustee and was Chairman of the Trustees for Friends of Camp Sabroske, where he gave lots of love and hard work to renovating the camp ground. In addition, he enjoyed working on the many projects of the Fremont Exchange Club and Fremont Kiwanis, while a member of those groups. In his leisure time, Norman found great peace and contentment in working with his flowers and landscaping and feeding the birds in his back yard. Anyone who knew Norm will remember him for his smile, his outgoing personality and his positive outlook on life. He will be missed greatly by his many friends and family, but the impact he has had on their lives will live on forever.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 17 from 2-5 & 7-9 p.m. at the Herman-Kinn-Karlovetz Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Fremont.
Funeral Services will be on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, Fremont with additional visitation one hour before the service with Rev. Lowell Peterson and Rev. Eric McGlade officiating.
Burial will follow at West Union Cemetery, Gibsonburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Trinity United Methodist Church or Terra Foundation in Memory of Norman Swaisgood.
