David Lee Witte, age 70, of Helena, Ohio died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, August 29, at the St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo. Born on July 16, 1937 in Elmore, Oh to the now deceased Lawrence and Carmelita (Miller) Witte, David graduated from Harris-Elmore High School and later married Gloria Jean Boots at the Zion Lutheran Church in Gibsonburg on September 21, 1957. She survives. David began his working career at the former Cunningham Heating and Plumbing Gibsonburg where he was employed for 6 years. He then worked as a maintenance foreman for the former Pfizer Lime Plant in Gibsonburg for over 20 years, until the time of its shutdown. David retired as a line leader at Hunt-Wesson in Perrysburg in 2001. During the Cuban Missile Crisis David was called to active duty from the Army National Guard. David and his family raised Shropshire Sheep for over 30 years and was a founding member of Sandusky County Sheep Improvement Association. He seen his sons through their 4-H projects and was an active 4-H advisor. He also served on the Sandusky County Junior Fair Livestock Sale Committee and was instrumental in the renovation of the sheep barn at the fairgrounds. David was named an Honorary Chapter Farmer of the Gibsonburg FFA and was a former little league baseball coach. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, racing and attending sheep shows. His greatest loves were his wife, sons, grandkids and his pet beagle, Daisy. David is survived by his wife, Gloria, sons Scott of Fremont, James (Jodi) of Gibsonburg, Steven (Roseann) of Mt. Cory and David (Kristy) of Gibsonburg, grandchildren Leah, Bradley, Justin, Aaron, Michael, Matthew, Cole and Chase, brother Richard (Susan) of Gibsonburg and several nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and infant brother, Dennis. Funeral services will be Sunday, September 2, 1:30 p.m. at the Herman-Kinn-Veh Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Gibsonburg. Rev. Fritz Merkes will officiate. Family and friends will be welcomed at the funeral home Saturday 2-4 & 6-9 p.m. Burial will be at West Union Cemetery, Gibsonburg. Memorials in Davids name may be made to the Sandusky County Junior Fair.
