Evelyn Cryan Maddy

Evelyn Cryan Maddy, 87, of Helena died at her home in the company of her family on Wednesday morning December 21, 2011. Born Evelyn Florine Mericle on March 17, 1924 in Perrysburg, OH, she was one of the children of John & Elsie (Leydorf) Mericle. Evelyn graduated from Perrysburg High School in 1941. She worked in an office at the Gendron Wheel Company in Perrysburg. In 1942 she traveled by train to Coronado, CA and was married to James Beverly Cryan III. A daughter, Patricia, was born in 1946. James died in 1948, a victim of Polio. Daughter, Jamie was born two months later. Evelyn moved in with her parents and worked as a secretary to Frank Toth, the Superintendant of Perrysburg Schools. In 1952 she married Glenn E. Maddy who was working as a tenant farmer. After he became a County Extension Agent, they purchased a farm in Sandusky County near Gibsonburg. They remodeled the barn to house 3000 chickens and set up a cattle feed lot. Evelyn gathered and washed the eggs and sold them on a route in Perrysburg making many friends in the process. She helped with a large garden and froze the vegetables harvested. She also was a 4-H leader. In 1976 she traveled to Nepal with her husband and met many people and enjoyed time spent with the children. When they returned, Evelyn & Glenn gave many slide presentations and persuaded many people to provide scholarships for children in Nepal to attend the Gandaki Boarding School in Pokhara, Nepal. After her children were grown she worked at Quality Farm & Fleet and then worked as manager of Fremont Personal Storage. She and Glenn enjoyed traveling to many parts of the world and they made several trips to visit those they had met in Nepal. Evelyn was a member of Faith United Methodist church, FUM Women, Washington Martha's, and Federation of Republican Women. She was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and partner. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Ralph & Donald; sister, Joanne Nagle; her first husband and a son-in-law, Gary Zajac. She is survived by five daughters; Patricia (Gene) Hoellrich of Sidney, OH, Jamie (Rich) Mackey of New Castle, PA, Virginia (Gary) Greunke of Port Clinton, Elizabeth Zajac of Woodville and Barbara (Alan) Ahle of Helena; a son, Glenn E. Maddy Jr. (Stephanie Langley-Maddy) of Marion; eighteen grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren and 6 step-great-grandchildren. Visitation for Evelyn will be on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Herman-Kinn-Veh Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Gibsonburg. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at Faith United Methodist Church, Gibsonburg where visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Pastor Betty Wineland will officiate. Burial will follow at Fort Meigs Cemetery, Perrysburg. Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice, Faith United Methodist Church or to the United Missions of Nepal.
