Barbara Jean Hammer

July 29, 1939 — February 1, 2012

Barbara Jean (Haubert) Hammer, died at Northwest Ohio Hospice, Perrysburg early Wednesday, February 1, 2012 surrounded by her loving family after her courageous battle with cancer. Barb was born July 29,1939 to Russell and Lucille (Foos) Haubert in Clyde, Ohio. She attended St. Ann's Catholic and St. Joseph's Catholic School in Fremont. She met the love of her life, Paul Lawrence Hammer and they were married on October 20, 1956. They were married 55 wonderful years and lived most of their married life in Woodville Township. After their wedding, they agreed that her mission would be to become a homemaker. As their five children were born, her duties as a mother became more involved. Barb was a homeroom mom, Cub Scout den leader, brownie assistant and an active little league mother. Later, as a 4-H leader, she hosted many meetings and picnics and helped her children exhibit fair animals and other projects. As a mother, Barb supported her children in a variety of ways in school including academics, band and sports. Some would call her a "mother on wheels!" Barb was active in the local homemaker's club. She was always there for her family and friends. Barb was a devoted Catholic and was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Gibsonburg. She was committed to her faith in a variety of ways including the Altar Rosary Society and Renew bible study classes. She was adamant that her children know how important faith was in life. Finally her dream job came truebeing a campground host (VIP) at Kelley's Island State park where she volunteered for the past 25+ years. Barb helped out wherever she was needed from hosting campfire dinners, family activities, helping in the office or simply being a cheerleader for the park. Barb and Paul camped each summer, making many, many friends who continue to support them through thoughts and prayers. Barb never met a stranger, making friends with everyone wherever she went. She often had pet names for many of the people she met which were endearing to them. She will be missed by those whose lives she touched. Barb is survived by her loving husband, Paul who was at her side constantly during her illness. She is also survived by her five children, their spouses and grandchildren; son, Steve (Joy) of Toledo; son John (Aimee) and their children David and Michael all of Gibsonburg; daughter Christina (Terry) Atkins and their children W. Thaddeus and Allison of Rohrersville, MD; son Bill (Tracy) of Woodville; son Matt (April) and their children Emma and Madison of Gibsonburg,. She was preceded in death by her parents Russell and Lucille "Nana" Haubert. Visitation will be on Friday, February 3, 2012, 1-8 p.m. at the Herman-Kinn-Veh Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 319 W. Madison St., Gibsonburg, OH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 321 E. Madison St., Gibsonburg, OH, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Ted Miller officiating. Burial will follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery.
