Richard Baker

Richard R.G. Baker, 88, of Fremont passed away on February 11, 2012 at Fremont Memorial Hospital. He was born on March 12, 1923 to Merle D. & Hazel (Willis) Baker. Richard served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII. During the war he served as a Mess Sergeant supervising the meals of over 150 men. For his efforts in the war he received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Theater Ribbon, a Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. On February 9, 1946, he married his sweet heart Iva M. Shiets at St. John's Lutheran Church. Richard worked as a sheet metal journeyman for several companies including Clyde Porcelain Steel, H. J. Heinz Co. and his own company The Baker Sheet Metal Company. He retired from Tindal Sheet Metal Co. in July of 1980 after 26 years of service. Richard was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the Loyal Order of the Moose and Sheet Metal Workers Union. He enjoyed wood crafting and outdoor sports. His favorite was Golf having four holes in one on regulation courses. Surviving is his wife Iva, daughters Kathleen (Leonard) Pickering of Fairfeildglade, TN and Kimberly Baker of Oak Harbor; brothers, Roland and Donald Baker; grandchildren, Ryan Pickering and Kristie (Paul) Hess; great-grandchildren, Ashley and Devin Pickering and Hanna, Jacob, Samuel, Jeremiah and Sera Hess. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Garold, Howard, Ross, Merlin, Harold, Herbert, Robert, Ralph, Clayton, Delbert and Viola Farster. Visitation will be on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Herman-Kinn-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Fremont. Funeral services will be on Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Fremont beginning at 10:30 a.m. with visitation starting one hour prior to the service at church. Pastor Joe Lees will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church.
