Irene H. Shaffer, 95, of Fremont, died early Monday, April 16, 2012 at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo. She was born on September 11, 1916 in Fremont to Rex and Hattie (Schecht) Gibbs. On October 7, 1933 she married Wayne A. Shaffer in Bowling Green, OH and he preceded her in death on November 2, 1989. Irene was a seamstress at Howard Zink for twenty-six years and the Detroit Gasket for sixteen years, retiring in 1976. She was the oldest member of the First United Church of Christ in Fremont. Irene was a former member of the Moose Auxiliary and of the "Holiday Ramblers Club". She enjoyed playing cards, camping and motorcycles. Surviving is a son, Jerry (Saundra) Shaffer of Fremont; grandchildren, Tracy Christopher, Tamara Daugherty, Thomas and David (Sheri) Shaffer; great-grandchildren, Adam, Derek, Joshua (Jamie), Danielle (J.D.), Jamie (Mike), Joe (Kay), Jennifer, Scott, Amanda (Harry) and Bethany (Jordan); great-great grandchildren, Christina, Dillon, Cameron and Alyssa; and a sister, Reva Lehman of Fremont. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, son LaMar, infant grandson, Bryan, brothers, Dale and LeRoy Gibbs and sister, Helen Drown. Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Herman-Kinn-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation services, Fremont. Services will be on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Elaine Bast officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First United Church of Christ in Irene's memory.
