Mildred S. Gavitt, lifelong resident of Fremont, died Wednesday, May 30, 2012, of cancer at the age of 94. She was born on September 5, 1917, to Thomas and Elizabeth Purcell Schuyler and graduated from Fremont Ross HS in 1935, where she played French horn in the band and orchestra. On August 11, 1941, Millie married Charles F. "Tubby" Gavitt, and the two of them operated a local restaurant, "The Old Elm Tea Room," until he entered the army in 1942. After raising her family, Millie joined the staff of the Sandusky County Auto Club in 1960, where she served as travel manager until her retirement in 1983. During her time at AAA, she was the voice of the Sandusky County Auto Club on WFRO and escorted many local residents on a variety of tours, including more than a dozen trips to Hawaii. Millie always loved good music and sang for several years with local Sweet Adelines groups. She also served on the board of directors for the Fremont Ross Music Alumni Foundation. Throughout her life, Millie was a devoted member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where she served on the parish vestry, belonged to St. Katherine's Guild and other women's groups, and was for many years the driving force behind the annual Epiphany luncheons. She was preceded in death by her husband, her sister Merriel Fangboner, and her brother Thomas Schuyler. Survivors include children Milinda Schwab (Gerald) of San Antonio, TX, and Garrett Gavitt (Pamela) of Smithfield, NC, grandchildren Jennifer Schwab of Washington, DC, Meghan Baine(Glenn) of Okinawa, Japan, Katherine Gavitt-Stollery (Mark )of Greensboro, NC, Kyle Gavitt (Jordan) of Wilmington, NC, and Alex Gavitt of Smithfield, NC, and great-grandchildren William Gavitt, and Brenden, Keara, and Jaydin Baine. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and friends, especially her dear nieces Ann Yeamans and Mary Elizabeth Gardner and her loving friend Sharon Ohms. The family would like to thank all the staff of Rutherford House and of Heartlands Hospice for their skill and compassion in caring for Millie. Services will be held Saturday, June 2, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Fremont. A viewing will begin at 10 am, with the funeral at 11 am, and burial following at Oakwood Cemetery. The family asks that memorials be given to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or the Humane Society.
