Thomas A. "Charlie" Hakes, 59, of Fremont, died late Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at Bethesda Care Center. He was born on October 28, 1953 in Tiffin, OH to William and Ruth (Burns) Hakes. Charlie was a 1972 graduate of Fremont Ross High School. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Fremont. On August 26, 1996 he married Joan Durnell at Grace Lutheran Church and she preceded him in death in 2008. Charlie was a machine operator at Kelsey Hayes for 35 years, retiring in 2006. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, hiking, bicycling and golfing in his spare time. Charlie was an Ohio State fan and enjoyed all Cleveland sports. Surviving is his mother, Ruth Hakes of Fremont; siblings, David (Diana) Hakes, Judy (Robert) Dolweck, George Hakes, Cheryl Hakes, Susan (Tony Bascone) Hammer and Michael Hakes all of Fremont. He is also survived by his dog, Sally. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He is preceded in death by his father. Visitation will be on Sunday, November 11, 2012 from 1-4 p.m. at the Herman-Kinn-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Fremont. A service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home with Certified Celebrant, Maureen Pump officiating. Memorial donations in Charlie's name may be made to the A.L.S. Foundation, Stein Hospice or Sandusky County Humane Society.
