Douglas M. Haubert, 58 of Helena, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky. Doug was born on April 10, 1955 in Fremont to Donald & Regina (Schade) Haubert, and they survive in Helena. Doug graduated from Gibsonburg High School and Vanguard. He served as the Operations Supervisor for 29 years for the Sandusky County Park District, followed by his service as the Habitat Manager for the Sandusky County Park District. In 2010 he was recognized by the Sandusky County Park District by renaming "White Star Wetlands" to "Doug Haubert Wetlands". Doug loved his job for 39 years and was a devoted and loving husband, father, son and brother to all of his family. He was such a dedicated employee to the Sandusky County Park District that he was working on a wetlands project up to six days prior to his passing. During his younger years he was active at Gibsonburg High School playing football. He loved fishing, nature and was known by his father as "The only man that could break a crowbar" and followed his true passion as a lifelong trapper with his dad, Donald. Doug was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Millersville, President of the Ohio State Trappers Association (OSTA), a liaison to the National Trappers Association (NTA) and he was an educator leading many trapping classes at the Magee Marsh. He assisted the Ohio Division of Wildlife with population studies, planned and developed many of the parks in Sandusky County thru the park district, leaving his fingerprint on each and every park. Doug was instrumental in revamping and co-authoring the muskrat trapping project book for the 4-H program and also served as a judge for muskrat trapping at the Ohio State Fair for several years. In September 2010, Doug was inducted into the Ohio State Trappers Hall of Fame. On October 17, 2003 he married Deborah "Debbie" McClure at Trinity Lutheran Church, Kingsway. Doug and Debbie shared their lives together through their passion and love of nature by spending as much time together traveling, hiking, camping and just being with each other. Along with his wife and best friend, Doug also became a volunteer and supporter of Back To The Wild, a wildlife rehabilitation and nature education center in Castalia. Doug is survived by his loving family; his parents; Donald & Regina of Helena, wife; Debbie of Helena, his daughter; Major (S) Jennifer & Lt. Col. Leland Cowie, USAF of Las Vegas, NV, his grandson; Leland Douglas Cowie, siblings; Susan (Luther) Gibbs of Fremont, Pam (Dave) Zimmerman of Fremont, Mike (Colleen) Haubert of Greenville, SC, his mother and father in-law; Willie (Teresa) McClure of Fremont, brothers-in-law; Doug McClure of Fremont and Gary (Jenny) McClure of Republic and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by an infant sister, Jodi Marie. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on July 2, 2013 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Millersville at 10:30 AM with Father Ted Miller officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sandusky County Park District, Ohio State Trappers Association or St. Mary's Church in Millersville. Arrangements were entrusted to the Herman-Kinn-Veh Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Gibsonburg.
