Bertha Caroline Gahn, 100, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2013 at Stein Hospice in Sandusky. She was born on May 20, 1913 in Woodville Township to John & Fredricka (Widmer) Deitemyer. She was baptized, confirmed and later married Howard F. Gahn on November 30, 1935 in Trinity Lutheran Church in Elmore, Ohio by Rev. A.C. Thober. Howard passed away on January 4, 1992. Bertha was a 1931 graduate of Harris Elmore High School and attended her 80th class reunion. She was the last surviving class member. Over the years she worked at the Ottawa Basket Factory in Elmore, and in Fremont worked at Hench's Bakery, J.C. Penney, Dr. W.R. McCune and Heinz. She and Howard retired to Georgia in 1975, and returned to Fremont in 1989 due to Howard's health. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, and sang in the Senior Choir, was a Sunday School teacher and a Lydia Circle member. She knew her Bible very well and would challenge anyone who doubted her. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, writing letters and playing her favorite hymns on the organ and piano. Surviving are children; Randall (Martha) Gahn of MI, Meredith (Jim) Holt of GA and Connie (Tom) Fishbaugh of Green Springs, OH, grandchildren; Gloria (Matt) Sivko of Marysville, OH, Philip Gahn of CA, Susan Gahn of FL, Joanna (Mike) Kolpien of Rocky River, OH, Stephen Gahn of Columbus, OH, Doug (Julie) Holt and Jill (Cris) Cook both of GA, and 11 great-grandchildren with one due in August. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings; Albert, Emery and Otto Deitemyer and Lucy Wendt. Visitation will be on Monday June 17, 2013 from 9:30 am- 11am at St. John's Lutheran Church in Fremont with services following at 11 am. Pastor Joseph Lees with officiate. Burial will take place at Roose Cemetery in Oak Harbor at 2:30pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bertha's memory may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, Stein Hospice, or donor's choice.
