Charles McCachren

Charles T. McCachren, 84, of Sandusky County, died on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at The Willows in Bellevue. He was born on December 10, 1928 in Columbia, PA to A.T. and Katharine (Brodhecker) McCachren. Charles was a 1946 graduate of Jackson High School and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture from The Ohio State University. On August 1, 1954 he married Charlotte Watson in Fremont and she survives. Charles served in the Army during the Korean War from May 3, 1952 to May 25, 1953 and received the Bronze Star Medal, then was honorably discharged on July 30, 1953. He was a dairy farmer and a fertilizer distributor for NaChurs Plant Food Co. for many years, retiring in 2005. Charles was a member of the Ohio Farm Bureau and served as President of Sandusky County Farm Bureau. Charles was elected Farm Bureau Federation spokesman for the 5th Congressional District, served by Congressman, Delbert Latta. This group held meetings with Washington D.C. Senators, Congressmen, and the Secretary of Agriculture on various issues. He was active in the Ohio 4-H Program, serving as host family for several exchangees of the 4-H Youth Exchange Program. Charles was a Docent and volunteer at the Hayes Presidential Center. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church and served as a Sunday school teacher, Deacon and Elder. Charles enjoyed photography. Surviving are children: Deborah (Thomas) Isley of Ohio, Laura (James) Walsh of Maryland and Suzanne McCachren of Ohio; three grandchildren, Anna Walsh, Emily Walsh and Samantha Hull; sister, Helen Kross of Florida. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Robert McCachren and Barbara Ignasiak. Visitation will be on Friday, September 6th from 3-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Herman-Kinn-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Fremont. Services will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with one hour of visitation prior to the service. Pastor David Gowen will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery with military rites performed by the American Legion and VFW. Contributions in Charles' memory may be made to Stein Hospice, The Willows in Bellevue, or to the American Cancer Society.
