Roy Allen Miller, age 96, passed away Sunday, September 29, 2013 in Gahanna, Ohio after a short illness. He was born November 25, 1916 in Canfield, Ohio to Charles and Ethel Miller. In 1944, Roy married Mary Alice Foster of Norman, Oklahoma. Roy and Mary had four children who all survive him: John (Lynda) Miller of Lindstrom, Minnesota, Sue Mehling of Fremont, Ohio, Chuck (Carol) Miller of Gahanna, Ohio, and Rick Miller of Fremont, Ohio. In 1982, Roy lost Mary to cancer and in 1983 he married Mary Amanda Huddleston, also of Fremont. She passed away in May of 2012. Also surviving Roy are 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Growing up in Portage County, Roy graduated in 1934 from Kent Roosevelt High School. During World War II he worked as an airplane mechanic in the Army Air Corps. His education then continued at Kent State University where he earned a undergraduate and master degree in education. Roy taught math and physical science for several years in the Portage County area before moving to Fremont, Ohio in 1951. He taught machine shop at Ross High School, was a supervisor of industrial arts at Vanguard Vocational School, and finished his career as a teacher educator with the University of Toledo. Roy retired in 1977, giving him more time to pursue his hobbies of music, electronics and all things mechanical. A Memorial service for Roy will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Hayes United Methodist Church in Fremont, Ohio. The family will receive guests at the church starting at 1 p.m. A graveside service will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Hayes United Methodist Church or the Just-in-Time Foundation (a Colorado based organization dedicated to helping families whose children are facing neuroblastoma) in recognition of Roy's great-grandson Justin's continuing battle with this disease.
