Catherine Zimmerman, 92, of Fremont, passed away at Memorial Hospital on October 10, 2013. Catherine was born on September 26, 1921 in Negaunee, MI to Dewey and Genevieve (Jestila) Hansen. While Catherine spent her younger years in Negaunee, including being a Mariner Girl Scout, she graduated from Graverat High School in Marquette in 1938. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Education from Northern Michigan University; and taught Home Economics and English in Brimley, MI. In 1943, she enlisted in the United States Navy, as a communications officer specializing in encoding and decoding, and served in New Orleans and Cape May, NJ. On July 2, 1946 she was discharged from the Navy. She married Glen Zimmerman on July 6, 1946 in Marquette, MI. Later she was a grade school teacher at Stamm Elementary School in Fremont, retiring in 1981. She was a member of the Home Ec Club, the Black Swamp Spinners, American Legion, a former Cub Scout Den Mother, a former Camp Fire Girls Leader and a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School. Surviving, along with her husband, are children: Karen (David) Cartwright of Waldo, OH and Glen (Therese) Zimmerman of Placerville, CA; brother, R. Dewey (Marilyn) Hansen of Peninsula, OH; grandchildren, Kathryn (Jerry) Benson and Charles Cartwright; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Nicole, Josephine and David Benson. Catherine is preceded in death by her parents and son, Bruce. Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Herman-Kinn-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Fremont where services will begin at noon. Certified Celebrant Maureen Pump will officiate. Burial with military rites will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
