Marvin J. Hetrick

March 1, 1915 — January 5, 2014

Marvin J. Hetrick, 98, of Lindsey, died Sunday, January 5, 2014 at Fremont Memorial Hospital. Marvin was born on March 1, 1915 in Lindsey, OH to Noah and Katherine (Gnepper) Hetrick. He was a 1933 graduate of Fremont Ross. On August 1, 1940, he married Doris C. Boyer. Marvin was always ready with "advice", even if not asked, and he had 20/20 hindsight. He'd challenge you to go beyond your capabilities by saying you couldn't do it (Ask Larry). Sometimes he was a "Grumpy Grandpa", but, then we knew he was ok. When he didn't complain or worry, there was a problem. As mom said, there are 3 ways to do things: the right way, the wrong way, or Marvy's way. His joy in life was his family and farming. As a lifelong farmer, Marvin farmed until his mid-80's, raising angus beef cattle, pickles, and tomatoes. He started farming with horses as a child, and ended up with driving 100 + horse power tractors at 85 years old. In addition to farming, he also enjoyed carpenter work. Marvin saw blizzards, droughts, floods, the Depression, WW I & II, and the conflicts of 50's and 60's. He always said, "If I knew I would live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself when I was young". He had a lot of nervous energy, and when he started school he spoke predominately Pennsylvania Dutch. Marvin was a hard worker, and helped set poles for electricity to come to their farm. He was also an active member of the community. Marvin was a Charter member of Fremont FFA, the Sugarbeet Board of Directors, Lindsey School Board, Lindsey Volunteer Fire Fighter, Farm Bureau Member, Trinity member for 70+ years, Friendship Class and a Trustee of the church, Washington Township School Board, Director of Fremont Beet Growers Association, Board of Directors Farmers Mercantile Elevator in Lindsey, Co-Owner of Gibsonburg Construction, and member of Aberdeen Angus Association. He enjoyed the Sandusky County Fair and attended every year until 2013. Surviving are children; Larry (Carol Nagy) Hetrick of Findlay, Liane (James) Jaquillard of Pemberville and Mark (Sandra) Hetrick of Lindsey; six grandchildren, Melissa (Jay) Gambrell, Tony (Leslie) Hetrick, Mary (Robert Catalano) Jaquillard, Matt (Julie) Jaquillard, Thomas (Karen) Hetrick, Susanna Hetrick; and six great-grandchildren, Caleb, Owen, Jonas Jaquillard, Leah Hetrick, Noah Hetrick and Charlotte Gambrell. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, siblings; Alice Manzeck, Elva Beck, Lawrence Hetrick, and Dwight Hetrick. Visitation will be held at the Herman-Kinn-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Fremont on Friday, January 10, 2013 from 2-4p.m. & 6-8p.m. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 231 S. Maple Street, Lindsey, where his body will lie in state one hour prior to the services. Rev. Robert Metheny will officiate. Burial will be held at Lindsey Cemetery. The family would like to thank Valley View and Dr. Mary Wonderly for the outstanding care during the past 9 months. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lindsey Trinity United Methodist Church, Lindsey or to the donor's choice.
