Carl Howard Faist, 102, residing in Fremont and of Gibsonburg passed away Monday, March 31, 2014 at Elmwood Assisted Living, Fremont. Carl was born on February 17, 1912 in Woodville to John & Sophia (Faulkert) Faist. He graduated from Woodville High School and went on to serve in the US Navy from 1942-1945 on the aircraft carrier the USS Swanee receiving the Phillipine Liberation Ribbon, 2 Bronze Stars, the Asiatic-Pacific Area Ribbon with 6 Bronze Stars, the WWII Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. In 1948 he married Lucille Roepke in Elmore and she survives in Fremont. Carl will be remembered for being the long time owner of the Faist Jewelry Store in Gibsonburg. He retired in 1982. He was a member Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Gibsonburg and the Gibsonburg Post of the American Legion. As a child, he began piano lessons and graduated from the Toledo Conservatory of Music which led to him travelling the country playing in dancing bands. He also enjoyed golfing. In addition to his wife, Lucille, Carl is survived by their daughter Carol Haubert (Charles) Houdeshell of Fremont; grandchildren Valerie (Tom) Szakovits, Brian (Jennifer) Haubert, Emily (Scott) Nieset and Stephanie (Jim) Hom; and 8 great-grandchildren. Carl is preceded in death by siblings Kenneth Faist, Lois Jones, Ruth Humphreys, Florence Ayers and Curtis Faist. Family and friends will be received at the Herman-Kinn-Veh Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Gibsonburg on Thursday, April 3 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday, April 4, 11:00 a.m., at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gibsonburg where visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Burial with military rites will be at North Union Cemetery, Gibsonburg. Contributions in Carl's memory may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, Gibsonburg, Hospice of Memorial Hospital or to that of the donor's choice.
