Norman D. Powers, 91 of Helena and most recently of the Ohio Veteran's Home, passed away April 8, 2014 at the Ohio Veteran's Home in Sandusky. He was born August 12, 1922 in Gibsonburg to Melvin J. and Minnie May (Houtz) Powers. Norman graduated from Gibsonburg High School and then enlisted in the U.S Army in 1944, serving in Central Europe. During his time in the service, he earned many medals and ribbons including the Good Conduct Medal, EAME Theater Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star device, the WWII Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge - Rifle SS. Most recently he was given a Bronze Star for actions during his earlier military service. Norman earned a Mechanical Engineering Degree in 1952 from the University of Toledo. He worked as a professional engineer for several companies, finally retiring from the Ohio Department of Transportation. Throughout this time he was also involved in farming. He was a member of the American Legion in Gibsonburg, Faith United Methodist Church and SAE. He enjoyed reading, riding his tractor, sledding and singing in the choir at church, and was given a special award by Big-Brothers-Big-Sisters for his volunteer work. Surviving are children; Alan Powers of Bowling Green, and Norman L.(Cindy) Powers of Helena; 3 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, special friend, Norma Foos of Gibsonburg and former wife, Melva Powers. He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Marsha Lynn Powers and brother, Melvin C. Powers. Visitation will be held at the Herman-Kinn-Veh Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Gibsonburg on Sunday, April 13, 2014 from 2-4pm & 6-8 pm. A funeral service will be held at Faith United Methodist Church in Gibsonburg on Monday at 11:00 am with one hour visitation prior to the service. Burial will follow at West Union Cemetery with Military Services. Pastor Betty Wineland will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Honor Flight or the Gibsonburg American Legion.
