Frederick H Black

Frederick "Fred" Harold Black, 86, died Friday, June 6, 2014 at his Gibsonburg home. Born in Quincy, MA on November 21, 1927, he was a son of Harold "Shorty" and Lorena (Tracy) Black. He served in the US Army from 1945-1947, stationed in Germany with the 1st Infantry Division. He then reenlisted in 1951, serving in Korea with the 25th Division, 89th Tank Battalion, being awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received during action. Fred took employment with the former Dolite Pfizer Lime Plant and also Ohio Lime Company where he worked for over 40 years in its maintenance department and as a welder, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Gibsonburg, a lifetime member of the Gibsonburg Volunteer Fire Department and former member of the Gibsonburg Zoning Board. Fred loved to spend time with his family, fishing, gardening, cooking and shopping at flea markets. On August 20, 1983, he married Janice Weber in Manton, MI. She survives. Also surviving are children Gary Alan (Lynette) Black of Plainwell, MI, Douglas Frederick Black, Rodney Sr, Scott, Jennifer (Fred) Keller all of Gibsonburg, Ed (Kasi) of Fremont, Nick (Candy) of MS; 24 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and sister Norma Jean (Dale) Johnson of Gibsonburg. Fred is preceded in death by his parents; son Mark Sr.; grandson Mark Jr.; and siblings Winfred Burns and Jerry Black. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 11, 2014, 10:30 a.m., at the Herman-Kinn-Veh Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Gibsonburg where family and friends will be welcome Tuesday 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Rev. Max Ulderich will officiate services. Burial with military honors will be at West Union Cemetery, Gibsonburg. Contributions may be made to the care of his family.
