Betty J. Tornow, 69, of Helena passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at the University of Toledo Medical Center. She was born on June 30, 1946 to H.G. and Mae Belle W. (Weis) Tornow. She was a 1964 graduate of Lakota High School and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Bowling Green University. Betty retired from Lakota Schools as a 6th grade teacher at the former Jackson-Burgoon School where she had worked for 30 years. She also dedicated her talents to the Genesis Program in Sandusky County Juvenile Court System as an educational tutor. Betty was a member of the Golden Threads, St. James Lutheran Church its church council, God's Store House and choir. She was also a member of the Veracious Voices, Rutherford B. Hayes Memorial Center and S.C.O.R.T.A. She loved traveling and teaching. Surviving are siblings, Paul (Shirley) Tornow of Helena, John (Mary) Tornow of Port Clinton, Don (Marlene) Tornow of Fremont, and Fay Martin of Sandusky; several nieces and nephews, and special friends, Becky Lauer, Mary Cribbs and Holly Wolpert. She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Francine Halfhill; and brother-in-law, Ballard Martin. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 24, 2015 at the Herman-Kinn-Veh Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Gibsonburg from 3-7 p.m. Funeral Services will take place at St. James Lutheran Church in Bradner on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. where her body will lie in state one hour prior to the start of the service. Pastor Melanie Haack will officiate. Graveside Services will be on Monday, July 27, 2015, 10:30 a.m. at the Allen Township Cemetery in Williston. Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, Bradner or to the donor's choice.
