Glenn Edward Maddy Sr., 89, of Helena died in the comfort of his home early Thursday morning August 13, 2015. He graduated from Perrysburg High School in 1943. After being captured and taken as a Prisoner of War during the Battle of the Bulge in WWII and nearly starving to death, Glenn dedicated his life to preventing others from experiencing hunger. He focused on his family business of farming, teaching about agriculture as an assistant professor at The Ohio State University, and helping those less fortunate overseas. Glenn served as Sandusky County's Extension Agricultural Agent for 27 years. He spent two years in Nepal with his late wife, Evelyn Maddy, a year in Pakistan and many more years as a volunteer and consultant for International Governments, the US Agency for International Development, food manufacturers and other organizations helping farmers and worked as a consultant in 8 other countries including Zimbabwe, Ghanna, Ukraine, Germany, Russia, the Philippines, Egypt, and India. In the U.S. Army, Glenn earned the 65th Division Medal, the Silver Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Victor Medal, Ex-POW Medal and a Purple Heart. He was inducted into the Veteran's Hall of Fame in 1999. Glenn had served as a member of the Gibsonburg School Board, Terra Community College Board, Portage Valley Board, the Ohio Farm Bureau, Corn and Soybean Association, and as a 4-H advisor. He served as a member of the Board at Faith United Methodist Church and helped sponsor more than 100 students at Pokhara Boys School in Nepal which originated with just 8 students when Glenn and Evelyn aided in developing the school during their stay in the '70's. Glenn saw education as the ultimate investment and he obtained degrees from Cornell University, the University of Minnesota, and Oxford University, in England. He was recognized by the Ohio Senior Citizen Hall of Fame, the Ward of Jubilation Year for Agriculture and Education in Nepal, Sandusky County Distinguished Service Award, the National County Agents of Agriculture and the State Representatives of Ohio.
