Rural Gibsonburg resident, Eleanor I. (Welling) Knieriem, 84, died at her home on Fri, Dec. 11, 2015. Born on Nov. 25, 1931 in Luckey, OH, she was one of two daughters of Harley and Freda (Henschen) Welling.
Eleanor graduated from Webster High School and attended secondary secretarial courses. On May 10, 1958, she married Richard E. Knieriem. He survives.
Eleanor previously worked at Brush Wellman for 10 years, but will be better remembered for her active, 40 plus years, membership of the Welker-Smith Unit 17 American Legion Auxiliary in Gibsonburg, where she was still its current secretary. Eleanor was also a long time member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gibsonburg. Her passion in life included crossword puzzles, knitting, and caring for her family. In addition, she was fond of the northern cardinal and owned a vast collection.
Also surviving are her children, Glenn R. of Houston, Gary of Oak Harbor, and Greg (Rona) of Lindsey; and grandchildren Meranda of Florida and Nathan of Lindsey. Eleanor is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Shirley Sheldrick.
Visitation will be Thur., Dec. 17, 2015, 2-8 p.m., at the Herman-Veh Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Gibsonburg, where American Legion Auxiliary Rites will be offered at 4:30 pm. Funeral Services will be Fri., 10:30 a.m., at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church where visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Rev. Blair Miller will officiate. Burial will be at West Union Cemetery, Gibsonburg.
Memorial donations may be made to Unit 17 American Legion Auxiliary or to Zion Lutheran Church.
