Elizabeth R. "Betty" Schell, 83, passed away on Fri., Jan. 15, 2016 at the Elmwood of Fremont. She was born on Dec. 3, 1932 in Gibsonburg to Otto & Eleanor (Reardon) Kirsch.
Betty was a 1951 graduate of Gibsonburg High School. She then received her Bachelor Degree in Nursing from the University of Michigan in 1955. Betty worked as a Registered Nurse for Fremont Memorial Hospital and then for Dr. Willis Damschroder. She and her husband were well known for their business, Ideal Bakery in Gibsonburg.
Betty was a member of the Jr. Federation, St. Michael's Altar and Rosary Society, Sorosis Club, and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She was known for her hours spent volunteering at the Blood Bank for the American Red Cross, leading the Girl Scouts and Brownies, and for being a Catholic Nurse; where she was the former President.
On Nov. 24, 1955, Betty married John Schell at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Gibsonburg; he survives. Also surviving are children, Kathryn (Bruce) Helberg of Napoleon, OH, Susan (Terrall) Hlebovy of Overland Park, KS, Timothy (Corinne) Schell of San Diego, CA, and John (Kathi) Schell, II of Fremont; grandchildren, Christopher (Lauren) Helberg, Mischell Helberg, Alexander Hlebovy, Timothy, Caitlyn, Trey and Stephani Schell; great-grandchildren, Lucas and Micah Helberg; and sister, Patricia Bork of Alpharetta, GA.
She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Phyllis Steirwalt; and brother, William Kirsch.
Visitation will be held on Mon., Jan. 18, 2-8 p.m., at the Herman-Veh Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Gibsonburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said on Tues., Jan. 19, 10:30 a.m., at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Gibsonburg. Burial will follow at St. Michaels & St. Lawrence Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael's Catholic Church, Gibsonburg and ProMedica Hospice of Memorial Hospital, Fremont.
