Harriet H. (Bookmyer) Eberly, 88, of Fremont, passed away on Tues., Feb. 23, 2016 at Elmwood of Fremont. She was born on Aug. 23, 1927 to John L. & Agnes (Sutter) Bookmyer in Clyde.
Harriet graduated from Green Springs High School in 1945. In 1948, she graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing as an RN. On May 30, 1950, Harriet married James "Jim" J. Eberly at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Clyde; he passed away on Oct. 19, 2012.
Harriet worked in Sandusky County as an RN throughout her career, serving our community at the Fremont Memorial Hospital and at the offices of Dr. M.M. Riddell, Dr. Richard Shurmer, and Dr. Richard Belch. She completed her nursing career at Green Springs Schools. Harriet worked at the American Red Cross for many years, assisting in blood banks and helping the flood relief in Fremont during the late 50's. Harriet was a nurse with the Sandusky Co. Migrant Clinic.
On many occasions Harriet and her husband, Jim, worked at the American Cancer Society State Golf Tournaments at the Firestone Country Club in Akron. Together they wintered in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas for many years.
Harriet was a member of the Golden Threads, Sandusky Co. Service Citizens, member of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corp, lifetime member of Mercy Alumni Association, longtime member of the Advisory Board for the American Cancer Society, and was a participant in a health research program for Harvard Medical School since 1973. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Harriet was a former member of the Fremont Deanery of Catholic Nurses and was a member of St. Ann Church Choir and Sympathy Choir. She was an avid Bridge player and Golfer, having been a longtime member of Sycamore Hills Golf Course Ladies League. Harriet learned to play the organ in her later years, taking lessons weekly at the Senior Center. She always thought of others, spending countless hours knitting blankets, hats, and scarves.
She is survived by sons, James (Jean) Eberly, Jr. of Bellevue and Richard (Laura) Eberly of Fremont; granddaughter, Elizabeth (Andy) Brown;; step-granddaughters, Leslie (Matt) Sanctis and Laura (David) Kline; great-grandchildren, Connor & Callie Brown and Shiloh & Gracyn Kline; and sister-in-law, Nancy Bookmyer of CA.
She is also preceded in death by infant sons, Michael & Robert; sisters, Marilyn Fouke and Phyllis Mathia; and brothers, George, Thomas, Robert, James, and infant brother, John.
Visitation will be on Fri., Feb. 26 from 2-4 p.m. & 6-8 p.m. at the Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Fremont. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Sat., Feb. 27, 10:30 a.m., at St. Ann's Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Calvary Section.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society (Sandusky Co. Unit), American Heart Association, or St. Ann's Catholic Community.
Arrangements were entrusted to our Fremont facility.
