FREMONT: Laurence "Doug" Harkness, Sr., 72, passed away Thurs., Feb. 25, 2016 at Elmwood at the Springs. He was born Aug. 27, 1943 to Walter F. & Bess (Slattery) Harkness, Sr. in Fremont.
Doug was a 1961 graduate of Fremont Ross High School. He then enlisted into the U.S. Navy where he served as a Medical Corpsman, serving in the Mediterranean on the USS Everglades and USS McCard, Honorably Discharged in 1964. Doug worked and retired from Heinz as a maintenance worker.
On June 26, 1965, Doug married Karen Meyers in Venice, OH; she survives. Also surviving are children, Angela (Dallas) Barnard of Howard, OH and Doug (Lavina) Harkness, Jr. of Fremont; grandchildren, Alissa (Cody) Mathias, Nathan Barnard, and T.J., Riley, & Trent Harkness; great-grandson, Garrett Golamb; and siblings, Sandra (Jack) Weaver, Linda Sorg, and Walter Harkness, Jr., all of Fremont.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Raymond Harkness.
Doug was a lifetime member of the Fremont VFW and the Fremont Eagles where he was a past president and trustee; and a member of the Fremont American Legion.
Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. on Sun., Feb. 28th at the Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Fremont; where Funeral Services will be on Mon., Feb. 29th, 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Four Mile House Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
